A mala is a string of beads used to count repetitions of a mantra, prayer, or affirmation. Itβs similar in purpose to a rosary in Christianity.
Mala Beads:
Usually 108 beads (a sacred number in many traditions).
Made from materials like Rudraksha seeds, sandalwood, tulsi, rosewood, lotus seeds, crystals, or gemstones.
Includes a guru bead (the larger bead that marks the starting point).
Pouch or Bag:
A cloth bag (often called a "Japa bag") to keep the mala clean and sacred.
Some have a hole for the index finger, allowing chanting while the mala is inside.

Blessing or Energization Certificate (optional):
In spiritual shops, mala sets may come with a note saying it has been blessed by a guru or monk.
